Powder Metal Steel

Powder Metallurgy, Powder Metal and/or PM High Speed Steels are alternatives to conventional steels since they have properties such as high hardness and toughness that cannot be attained in high speed steels that are produced through conventional methods. Steel grades with high temperature strength, high wear resistance and good toughness properties are necessary for today’s applications. Powder Metallurgy is the process by which steel is being made to meet these needs by blending fine powdered materials, pressing them into a desired shape or form (compacting), and then heating the compressed material in a controlled atmosphere to bond the material (sintering).

The powder metallurgy process generally consists of four basic steps: powder manufacture, powder blending, compacting, and sintering. Compacting is generally performed at room temperature, and the elevated temperature process of sintering is usually conducted at atmospheric pressure. Optional secondary processing often follows to obtain special properties or enhanced precision. In Powder Metal steels, very small and hard alloy carbides greatly increase the wear resistance, and at the same time the ductility, in all directions. This is in contrast to conventionally produced steel where increased ductility can only be gained at the expense of reduced wear resistance or hardness.

Powder Steel

Griggs Steel offers the following Powder Metal High Speed Steels:

PM M4 High Speed Steel

PM M4 High Speed Tool Steel is an extremely versatile high speed steel that provides a unique combination of high wear resistance from the large volume of vanadium carbides with high impact toughness and transverse bend strength which are results of the fine grain size, small carbides, and superior cleanliness of the powder metallurgy (PM) microstructure. PM M4 offers improved cutting tool life compared to conventionally-wrought M1, M2, M7 and other lower-alloyed high speed steels and excels in cold work tooling applications, where it provides better toughness and wear resistance than high-carbon, high-chromium die steels such as D2 and D3.

PM T15 High Speed Steel

PM T15 High Speed Tool Steel is cobalt-bearing super high-speed steel. A high volume of hard vanadium carbides provides very high wear resistance. The cobalt content provides excellent resistance to softening at high service temperatures (red or hot hardness). These properties translate into extended retention of hard, sharp cutting edges on tools produced from PM T15. Because of the powder metal (PM) manufacturing, PM T15 is far easier to grind and exhibits impact toughness that is more than double that of traditional T15 high-speed steel.

PM M48 High Speed Steel

PM M48 High Speed Tool Steel is a high-performance high speed steel which exhibits superior hot (red) hardness compared to T15 and M42 high speed steels, and wear resistance comparable to that of T15. The high cobalt content enables the steel to maintain high hardness at elevated service temperatures. Vanadium carbides provide the high wear resistance, and the fine grain size, small carbides, and superior cleanliness of the powder metallurgy (PM) microstructure maximize the toughness of the steel. Offers improved cutting tool life compared to the M-series high speed steels.

PM A11 High Speed Steel

PM A11 High Speed Tool Steel is a versatile tool and die steel which provides extremely high wear resistance in combination with relatively high impact toughness. A large volume of hard vanadium carbides provides the high wear resistance. The good impact toughness is the result of the fine grain size, small carbides, and superior cleanliness of the powder metallurgy (PM) microstructure. PM A11 High Speed Steel offers substantially better wear resistance than the high-carbon, high-chromium die steels such as D2 and D7.

PM 23 High Speed Steel

PM 23 High Speed Tool Steel is a high alloyed powder metallurgical high speed steel corresponding to AISI M3:2 with a very good abrasive wear resistance in combination with a high compressive strength. It is suitable for demanding cold work applications like blanking of harder materials like carbon steel or cold rolled strip steel and for cutting tools. The machinability and grindability are superior than for conventional high speed steel and so is the dimensional stability after heat treatment.

AKA : ASP 2023, S790, M3-2

PM 60 High Speed Steel

PM 60 High Speed Tool Steel is a high alloyed powder metallurgical high speed steel suitable for very demanding cold work applications and for cutting tools. The high carbon and alloying content, Co, Mo, W and V, gives an extremely high compressive strength combined with a very good abrasive wear resistance. For cutting tool applications PM 60 offers a unique combination of high wear resistance, hot hardness and good toughness compared to all other high speed steels.
